Muscle injuries such as sprains occur as a result of a sudden, twisting impact of ligaments due to falls or sports injuries and usually comes with swelling. The first thing anyone should do is to administer first aid that is RICE which stands for
R - Rest the affected area and do not engage in activity
I - Ice is applied to the injured area to reduce swelling by constricting the blood vessels. Do not apply directly but instead use a cloth cover. Ice compression should not take more than 10 - 20 mins each time, 4 to 8 times a day
C - Compress the affected area using crepe bandages but not too tight
E - Elevation of the injured limb above the level of the heart will also reduce swelling
